Other headcanon that before being enthroned, the Dark Pope’s chosen heir is ritually murdered.
A Ghouls choir will chant sacred texts while Sister Imperator impales the heir’s brain through his left eye (left being considered as evil, as opposed to right), slowly killing him in the process.

During his short afterlife, the heir is supposed to have a discussion with the Devil itself, who will judge him worthy or not of his duty as a Pope. If he succeeds, the heir is spontaneously brought back to life. This step can take up to forty days, at the end of which the corpse is burned if it isn’t resurrected.

If everything goes as planned, the heir awakes as Papa Emeritus and is crowned the next day. He is maintained alive by the Devil’s will alone, and ages accordingly to His needs : an unsuccessful Pope can see himself gaining 30 years in a day span, or can even drop dead if his mistakes are unforgivable.
